Born and raised in Montreal, Rabbi Sebbag began his singing career at the age of 10 when he was called up by Young Israel’s famed Rev. Meller to lead the concluding services of Ein Kelokeinu. Rev. Meller told David’s father that the little boy had a beautiful voice and shouldn’t neglect his singing talents. His father placed him under the tutelage of Chazzan Pinchas Rabinowics of Congregation Zichron Kedoshim, and he sang in the choir there. Later on, after taking classes in chazzanut at Yeshiva University, Rabbi Sebbag began to lead the High Holiday services in various synagogues but never pursued it as a career. When he rejoined the minyan at Young Israel in 2000, the then president of the shul Mr. Milan Hoffman Z”L encouraged him to sing before the amud. After Mr. Hoffman’s passing, Mr. Aaron Green, with the approval of Rabbi Kaufman, encouraged Rabbi Sebbag to lead the services on many shabbotim, and after years of personal enjoyment gave him the position of Chazzan of Young Israel in 2006, a position which he held till December 2017. He has been chazzan for Congregations Beth Zion of Montreal from 2018 to 2020 and at the Adath Israel Poalei Tzedek of Montreal for high holidays in 2021. In addition to being a chazzan, Rabbi Sebbag has received his rabbinical ordination in 2000 by Rabbi Yaakov Spivak Z”L and in addition by Rabbi Mordechai Ginsburg Ram Kollel Tosh in 2023.
